Automotive floor mats are the first line of defense for car, truck, or SUV valuable factory floors. It presents the daunting task of providing floor mats with an additional level of comfort and complementing the aesthetics of the car, while being able to withstand different levels of abuse on a regular basis.
Vehicle manufacturers have attempted to solve the unique problems faced by floor mats by creating a number of material types aimed at providing adequate protection for the intended use of the vehicle.
Aftermarket carpet and floor mat manufacturers offer products using materials and colors designed for OEMs while improving the originals.
What original materials are available?
Katopile
-Cut pile is made of 100% nylon yarn.
-1/8 gauge cut pile tufted and contains 14 ounces of yarn per square yard.
-Cut pile has been the original material for most domestic cars since around 1974.
-Cut pile material can have mass backing. Mass backing is an EVA material with a thickness of about 45 mil. It is a great sound and heat barrier and enhances the overall appearance of the carpet after installation.
-The width of the cut pile material is 78 inches.
loop
-Loop material is composed of 100% 6,6 nylon thread called Raylon
-1/8 gauge tufted loops contain 20 ounces of thread per square yard.
-Loop material was originally used in vehicles manufactured before 1974.
-Mass backing can be used for loop material. The width of the loop material is 78 inches.
Nylon
-Nylon is composed of 100% nylon thread.
-1/8 gauge tufted nylon contains 12 ounces of yarn per square yard.
-Nylon material was originally used in Model Ford in the late 1960s.
-Nylon material is available with optional mass backing.
-Nylon material is 78 inches wide.
Torvet
–Truvette is made of 100% nylon thread.
The -5/64 gauge tufted torvet contains 14 ounces of yarn per square yard.
-Torvet material was introduced to Corvette in the early 1990s.
-Torvet material can have mass backing. Mass backing is an EVA material with a thickness of about 45 mil.
-The width of the torvet material is 78 inches.
Daytona
-Daytona woven carpet is made of cotton, nylon and rayon yarn.
-Daytona is a loop style carpet containing 27.5 ounces of yarn per square yard.
-Daytona woven carpet was introduced around 1954 for GM vehicles.
-Form backing only. Daytona cannot be molded or mass backed. It is cut and sewn by hand with the best quality control.
-Daytona material is 54 inches wide
tuxedo
-Tuxedo is composed of nylon and olefin filament yarn.
-1/8 gauge tufted tuxedo contains 23 ounces of thread per square yard.
-Tuxedo material can have mass backing.
-The width of the tuxedo material is 52 inches.
Grosse Pointe
-Grosse Pointe material is composed of 100% nylon thread.
-Grosse Pointe contains 31.5 ounces of yarn per square yard and is a fine loop style carpet.
–Gros Point was developed for early models of classic muscles and full-size passenger cars manufactured in the 1950s and 1960s.
-Form backing only. Grosse points cannot be molded or mass backed. It is cut and sewn by hand with the best quality control.
-Grosse Pointe material width is 54 inches
What are Aftermarket Options?
Essex
-Available as an optional upgrade for most ACC floor mats
-Essex is made of 100% nylon thread.
Tufted in a -1 / 10 gauge cut pile, Essex contains 22.5 ounces of yarn per square yard, providing a luxurious and luxurious look and feel.
-Essex has been available as an aftermarket material choice since the late 2000s. This is a premium, modern version of the cut pile material. It can be specified for almost all model vehicles.
-Mass backing can be used for Essex material. Mass backing is an EVA material with a thickness of about 45 mil. It is a great sound and heat barrier and enhances the overall appearance of the carpet after installation.
