Vestibular disorders in dogs: causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

The vestibular system helps provide the dog with a sense of equilibrium and spatial disorientation. However, dysfunction can seriously affect the dog’s body’s balance system. The system contains the inner ear and parts of the brain that are involved in balance and eye movements. Congenital vestibular disorders are found during the first 3 months of life. Certain dogs, such as the Doberman Pinscher, English Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, German Shepherd, Tibetan Terrier, and Smooth Fox Terrier, are prone to this condition.

This disorder is often mistaken for a stroke. Dizziness caused by this disease adversely affects older dogs with symptoms such as difficulty standing up, turning, nystagmus, nausea, and tilting of the head. Older dogs are more stressed by the disease and need to be relieved through soil sedatives such as amino acids, L-theanine, hops, valerians, chamomile, passion flower and other herbs. Diagnosis

The veterinarian will perform a physical examination to determine if the disorder is peripheral or central.
