Chemise, information, history. Chemise is a modern type of women’s underwear, also widely known as shift or classic smock. It is also considered a dress that features very simple things. Prior to its classic use, it was to protect women’s outerwear from body oils and sweat.

The word chemise actually means “shirt” in French. In other languages, such as Spanish and Portuguese, it is called Camisa, and in Italian it is called Camicia. Its origin can be traced from the early Tunica, the Roman version of the Greek toga. It was widely popular in Europe during the Middle Ages. It is loose and measures to the knee, either sleeved or sleeveless, and is worn by both men and women. Women wore chemise under dresses, robes and gowns and were washed regularly. Men, on the other hand, wore chemises under doublets and robes.

Earlier women sewed chemises at home from cut pieces of clothing in the shape of rectangles or triangles. Poor people will usually sew their chemises from a coarse cloth, while rich people will be made of fine, silky linen cloth that they flow through.

But in the early 20th century, chemise became obsolete with the advent of full slips, bras, girdles and panties. The chemises in use today are no longer similar to the chemises used before they first became popular. Most chemises these days are more delicate and provocative in appearance. They are now considered lingerie and are not just the underwear that women use on a daily basis. They are now commonly worn as nightwear, nightwear, especially under business suits for a more feminine touch.

The former male chemise is what is now commonly referred to as a T-shirt. Men still use T-shirts as their underwear, wearing them under polo shirts and long sleeves. The male chemise is also said to have turned into what they call smocks. Smock became popular in the early 20th century and was used by British workers. The term smock is still used to refer to British military combat jackets.

Currently available in lingerie shops, chemises come with sleeveless or spaghetti straps and fall straight off your shoulders. They are made of thin fabrics or materials. It can be the simplest cotton or smooth and expensive silk. Sometimes the cup is also sewn into the chemise, adding decoration to the trim.
