The Wagon R was first launched in Japan by Suzuki Motor in 1993. It soon became a bestseller in Japan. Suzuki produces more than 3 million cars. The name “R” was supposed to represent recreation. It’s an interesting design. It has a short bonnet and is unusually tall. Almost vertical hatchback. This design maximizes cabin space.
The height of the first Wagon R is 1,640 mm. It was 255mm taller than the Alto sold in Japan at that time. It is interesting because the length and width of Wagon R and Alto are the same. Suzuki launched the second generation Wagon R in 1998. Then in 1999, the Wagon R + was released. It was also introduced in the European market in 2000. Manufactured in Hungary and India.
Suzuki has launched the Wagon R in India in collaboration with its partner Multi. It has been improved to make it look better. Wagon R has been very successful in India. Currently, it is one of Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling models.
Interestingly, despite being among the oldest box-designed cars, the Wagon R came late in India, with the modern box-designed car Santro in front of the car. In the Indian car market, the Wagon R is available in three variations. The LX version doesn’t have power steering, but the LXi comes with power steering and the VXi has all the features the car offers. This car is also available in India with automatic transmissions.
When the first Wagon R was launched in the Indian market, its unusual appearance did not appeal to Indians. But soon, the car had its own fan, especially among young professionals. The car is now highly regarded for its unusual design and economy.
As competition intensifies in the Indian car market, Martis Suzuki seeks to maintain its lead by launching a new version of the car. Recently, the company launched a new version of the compact car Zen and renamed it Estillo. The company will soon launch a new version of the Maruti Wagon R as it must meet the strict emission regulations that will come into force in India in April 2010.
