How to replace the E46 BMW 3 Series brake pads

Over time, the brake pads on any car tend to wear out. Therefore, it must be replaced after it has worn out. If you would like to replace the E46 BMW 3 Series brake pads, please follow the steps below.

Step # 1 Remove the tire

First, you need to use a spanner to loosen the wheel nuts. Next, you need to lift the vehicle from one side with a strong car jack to prevent the tires from touching the ground. Then you need to remove the nut and separate the wheel from the hub.

Step 2 Remove the disc caliper

Use a screwdriver to remove the clip from the caliper. Next, you need to remove the pair of dust caps on the back of the caliper to access the slide bolts. Next, you need to use a 7mm Allen key to remove the pair of slide bolts and separate them from the assembly. At that time, you can remove the caliper from the brake disc to access the brake pads.

Step # 3 Replace the brake pads

After removing the worn brake pads, you can remove the brake fluid bottle cap. When you push the piston, the brake fluid returns to the fluid reservoir. Now you need to make space for the new brake pads.

Grease the sides of the piston for easy sliding. Now you need to grease the edges and rear of the brake pads to allow them to slide without problems. Tap the caliper with a hammer and slide it onto the disc. At this stage, you need to make sure that the pads and calipers are in place.

You can now grease the caliper slide bolts and screw them into the threads and sockets. Finally, replace the dust cover and use a screwdriver to clip the surface of the caliper.

Step 4 Reinstall the wheel

You can now use the wheel spanner to slide the wheel back into the wheel hub. Make sure you follow the star configuration. Then lower the jack to bring the car back to the ground. Finally, don’t forget to tighten each nut one by one.

Finally, repeat the same process on the second wheel.

Step 5 Check the level of brake fluid

After replacing both pads, you should check the brake fluid to make sure it reaches the maximum level. If there is too much liquid, you will need to use a syringe to pull the liquid out.
