Volkswagen Repair-The Truth About VW's "Lifetime" Automatic Transmission Fluid

Volkswagen Repair-The Truth About VW

If there’s one thing San Francisco’s International Sports Motors has encountered over the years, it’s a Volkswagen automatic transmission problem. That’s why Volkswagen’s “lifetime” automatic transmission fluid system sounds so good. Modern synthetics are more protective and last longer than competing oils, but they don’t last forever. In fact, legally, the term “lifetime fluid” refers only to the duration of the VW Powertrain Warranty. Therefore, if your warranty expires, you will be out of luck.

Volkswagen, along with many other car makers, knows that most owners don’t keep their car over 100,000 miles. The so-called “lifetime” fluid is just a marketing twist used to support the sale of cars that require “minimal maintenance”. However, beyond 100,000 miles (if the vehicle really needs attention), most Volkswagen repair warranty will be void. As a result, VW plans to replace the 105,000 mile timing belt with a 1.8T engine, and most “lifetime” guarantees are fake.

If you intend to keep your car for a while, the cost of ATF, which can never be replaced, will scare you. Leaving this liquid “lifetime” can cause serious damage to filters and oil pans. Metal shavings build up on filters and oil pans, eventually damaging the transmission. The resulting repairs are costly. So please agree with yourself. If you plan to keep your car to see 150,000 or 200,000 miles, change the ATF yourself on a regular basis.

This task can be complicated, but it’s well worth the effort. Visit your local VW-Audi auto parts retailer (such as German AutoParts or ECStuning) to purchase VW-specific oil and filter kits. Obtain the filter kit and ATF Pentocin G-052-162-A2 for both the 01M automatic transmission and the MK4. Do the same with manual transmission oil. That way, your car will continue to run well until old age.

By the way, don’t bother asking Volkswagen Service writers about these “lifetime” loopholes. They claim that products like ATF are “lifelong sealed”, which is a corporate obligation. If you want your Volkswagen to run smoothly, follow the advice above. Or, if you want to get the longest life and best performance from Volkswagen, do it yourself or contact a Volkswagen repair shop who is willing to perform these types of preventive maintenance services. It is much more cost effective than replacing the entire transmission.
