In the mid-1990s, when electronic stability control was introduced, driving safety improved dramatically. Bosch, a German car supplier, first developed the system with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is the ability to use speed sensors on each wheel and brake those individual wheels. ESC adds a unit that helps monitor the angle of the steering wheel and the rotation around the vertical axis of the vehicle. When the vehicle begins to drive in a direction different from the indicated steering wheel position, the ESC brakes the appropriate wheels to allow the driver to maintain control. Simply put, a well-designed ESC system greatly reduces the chance of losing control of your car under most operating conditions. The ESC system prevents loss of control that causes the vehicle to roll over and is especially helpful in preventing loss of control while driving on slippery roads. Consumer Reports even shared that “Electronic Stability Control is the best safety feature ever since a seatbelt.”
Many companies are renaming their ESC systems. Ford named it Advance Trac, Audi called it the Electronic Stability Program, GM named it Stabilitrak, and Porsche named it Porsche Stability Management. Requesting in a vehicle can be confusing, but all of these systems work the same.
Over time, ESC has become more sophisticated and cheaper. Many people now require ESC when buying a car. An analysis by the European Accident Cause Investigation found that in 18% of all injuries and 34% of all fatal accidents, ESC would have reduced the likelihood of accidents or prevented them all together. .. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety states that equipping vehicles with electronic stability control can reduce the risk of rollover by more than 70% and prevent as many as 9,000 fatal accidents annually.
By 2010, 85% of all vehicles were equipped with ESC. When vehicles were equipped with ESC, there was a significant reduction in single and multiple vehicle collisions. The government now mandates ESC for all passenger cars manufactured after 2012. ESC works seamlessly with antilock braking systems and traction control, making these features standard in all segments, including low-cost models. This is a big step towards increasing driving safety, but many people still buy or buy used cars without ESC. To check if your car is equipped with ESC http://www.iihs.org/..
