From classic to modern

car

The Challenge Stradale sports car was introduced by Ferrari in 1999 with the launch of the 360 Modena and Spider.

Stradale was the best performing road-going variant in the 360 series.

It was the successor to the 355 Challenge Sports Car, which peaked in development with the Evolution variant, a race car assembled in a factory that was almost completed in 1998.

The 360 Challenge was based on the 360 Modena and was a limited edition racer designed to allow Ferrari to spend 20% of its time as a track day racer and the remaining 80% as a road-going sports car.

The Challenge Stradale is 110kg lighter than the basic 360 Modena as a result of many weight reduction measures, including:

  • Radio removal
  • Replace windowpanes with plexiglass
  • Use Alcantara fabric instead of leather interior
  • Achieves weight reduction of bumpers and skirts by adopting special molding
  • Removal of internal silencer
  • Use of carbon fiber mirror
  • Added optional carbon fiber sheet from Modena

With these changes, we have achieved a weight reduction of 94 kg.

Equipped with 19-inch road wheels and using Brembo brakes made of carbon composite material, we saved an additional 16 kg. This prevents the brakes from fading and reduces weight for improved handling.

The engine, body panel and chassis are all made of aluminum.

When using the standard 6-speed F1 style paddle shift gear change system, the driver can throw a switch to select either sport mode or race mode.

In the latter case, turning off traction control provided the driver with a high-performance start as long as sufficient grip was obtained under normal driving conditions.

The Stradale chassis was designed to have a center of gravity 15mm lower than the standard car.

All unnecessary interiors such as carpets and mats were removed and the door panels were made of carbon fiber.

It used a lightweight aluminum rollover bar behind the seat specially designed for the car, with stiffer springs and adjustable computer-controlled damping.

With the improved carbon fiber under tray, downforce was further increased as the car was driven harder.

That engine

The 360 Challenge was equipped with the same mid-engine, 3.6-liter V8 unit as the other 360 variants, with 5 valves per cylinder, producing 425bhp at 8500rpm and 275ft / lbs at 4750rpm.

This resulted in a top speed of 186 mph and a time of 0-62 mph in 4.0 seconds.

Power was increased by using a high compression combustion chamber with polished ports and increasing the compression slightly to 11.2: 1.

The total weight of the engine and gearbox has been reduced by 11 kg by using a shorter, lighter stainless steel sports rear exhaust box and improved outlet pipes.

competition

Typical competition for the 360 Challenge Stradale included the Lamborghini Murcielago and the Dodge Viper SRT-10. Ferrari Performance:
