Mercedes-Benz has a very complex line of internal codes with a mysterious combination of letters and numbers that symbolize every vehicle. Initially a simple combination of letters and numbers, the introduction of a new model has created a new list of internal code lineups. The combination of letters and numbers was used to accommodate engine displacement, but this is not always the case today. This is a quick guide to the meaning of all letters and numbers.
Class A:
This is the smallest car in the Mercedes brand lineup that is properly named in the alphabet. The code name is W176, and “W” is a 4/5 door passenger car.
B class:
The B-Class is the second smallest car, so it’s pretty obvious how to get this label.
C class:
Labeling the C class is more complicated. Internally named W205, also known as S205, S stands for station wagon. In future models, the coupe will also receive the internal codes of the C205 and A204, where the “C” will be the coupe and the “A” will be convertible.
E class:
The E-class consists of multiple models with an internal name of W212. However, the station wagon gets S212. The E-Class Coupe is named C207 instead of C212. This is because it has much in common with the previous generation C class 204. The “E” in the E class meant “injection” in German.
S class:
S class means “special class” in German. This is because this large sedan was and still is the top class vehicle in the Mercedes series. The code is named W222 and the S-Class Coupe is named C217. The future convertible will be named A217.
CLA:
The CLA, sold as a C117 codenamed 4-door coupe, has confused many Mercedes-Benz fans.
CLS:
This is also a 4-door coupe, codenamed C218. The name of the crossover version is X218.
SLK:
The SLK is the smallest roadster on the Mercedes line with code R172. “R” is an abbreviation for Roadster.
SL: SL:
The SL Roadster is actually very similar to the SLK and is properly named R231.
With the addition of many Mercedes-Benz cars in the future, the internal codename should be very fast and complex. Codenames can be hard to remember at first, but if you get the hang of it and understand why the code is attached to your vehicle, it’s pretty easy to understand.
