History of Suzuki AH50 Scooter

History of Suzuki AH50 Scooter

Released in 1992, the Suzuki AH50 Scooter was designed as a small and fun scooter in Europe. Weighing only 60 kg, this was definitely Suzuki’s AH series baby. This included both 100cc and 125cc models. As the name implies, the AH50 was powered by a small 49cc engine. This was another line of air-cooled two-stroke engines found in Suzuki motorcycles since the 1960s.

Suzuki engineers were able to squeeze 6.5 bhp from a 49cc unit. That’s a fair amount for a 60kg bike. With an automatic transmission, almost anyone was able to get started right away. The 10-inch tubeless wheel and low wheelbase made it easy to handle. It didn’t take long for the Suzuki AH50 to become popular with young riders looking for a legitimate throttle-responsive scooter. In fact, European motor enthusiasts have sought to take performance to a new level with custom parts and mods. At least one Italian company has provided a kit that allows bikers to improve acceleration and power supply. Factory-grade scooters often reach 70 mph, but tuned AH 50 bikes have been rumored to exceed the magical 100s.

If you look at the Suzuki AH50 on the streets today, you might not think it’s a bike with such a sporty legacy. It has the same clean lines and 90’s design as other AH series scooters. Attractive, but not spectacular. However, the original 1990s AH 50, registered in the UK, has engine restrictions based on the rider’s safety laws of the time. The instrument panel was basic and provided the rider with important information in one cluster. The AH 50 also has practical features such as a small under-seat storage area large enough to store the rider’s helmet.

Most existing Suzuki AH50 scooters would have undergone some customization or repair. Common parts are small rearview mirrors and seats. However, enthusiasts can always choose to reverse engineer the Suzuki AH50 to factory specifications. Since the end of production of the bike in 1995, very few reputable parts dealers have genuine AH50 parts. Professional dealers can also help identify which AH50 parts are replaceable with other AH series scooters. With a small amount of elbow grease, this scooter can be restored very easily. Even today, the Suzuki AH 50 in good condition is an inexpensive scooter with few frills but quite high thrills!
